Yianni Captures US Open Title; Ruiz, Cornella Place



Yianni Diakomihalis made an impressive debut at 70 kg, winning the US Open championship in Las Vegas and advancing to Final X on June 14 in Newark, New Jersey.


After pinning Bryce Andonian in the semifinals, Yianni defeated James Green 8-2 in the title match. Yianni led 2-0 after the first, then trailed 2-2 on criteria midway through the second before two late takedowns sealed the victory.


Simon Ruiz continued his successful run with a third place showing at 79 kg that included a pair of victories over Carson Kharchla. The freshman All-American for the Big Red went 5-1 with his only loss to eventual champ Evan Wick.


Vince Cornella made his return to competition after missing the college season for Cornell and earned a spot on the podium, taking 8th at 65 kg.
