Dake and Arujau Win Pan American Championships




Undefeated and unscored upon.


At the Pan American Senior Championships in Guatemala City on May 27, Spartan Combat RTC athletes Vito Arujau (57 kg) and Kyle Dake (74 kg) both earned gold medals for Team USA with dominant performances.


Dake, who will next compete at the Olympic Games in Tokyo, outscored his opponents 40-0, with four first period technical falls. He topped Victor Eduardo Hernandez Luna of Mexico, Jasmit Singh Phulka of Canada, Renato Patricio DaSilva of Brazil, and Julio Rafael Rodriguez Romero of the Dominican Republic by matching 10-0 scores. Dake spent just over four minutes total in competition.


Arujau also made quick work of his opponents, beating Bryan Lucas De Olivera Pereira of Brazil 10-0 in less than a minute in his first bout, before topping Alexander Fernandez Pena of the Dominican Republic 11-0 in under 90 seconds in the semis. The finals were similar, as Arujau took just 1:22 to defeat Roberto Alejandro Blanco of Mexico 10-0.


The American men’s freestyle team was perfect, capturing championships at all 10 weights. Also earning gold for the USA were: Shelton Mack (61 kg), Joey McKenna (65 kg), Alec Pantaleo (70 kg), Tommy Gantt (79 kg), David Taylor (86 kg), Nate Jackson (92 kg), Kyle Snyder (97 kg), and Gable Steveson (125 kg).
