Dake Wins 3rd World Title!

That's 3!

Kyle Dake captured his third world title on Sunday, with a 7-3 victory over Tajmuraz Salkazonov of Slovakia.

It was Dake's first championship at 74 kg, as his previous two were at 79 kg.

The Cornell graduate was in control from start to finish at the tournament, teching Vasile Diacon of Moldova 11-0 in his opening bout before blanking Fazli Eryilmaz of Turkey, 5-0, in the next round.

He exploded out to an 8-0 advantage in the semis against Azamat Nurykau and won 9-1 to set up the finals match against Salkazonov.

The gold in Norway makes it a two medal 2021 for Dake, who also captured bronze at the Olympic Games in Tokyo in August.

Dake wasn't the only wrestler from Spartan Combat RTC competing for Team USA in Oslo.

Nick Gwiazdowski put together a strong performance at 125 kg, taking fifth in a loaded bracket. Gwiazdowski tallied solid victories over Amar Dhesi of Canada and Dzianis Khramiankou of Belarus, losing to eventual champion Amir Zare of Iran in between. In the bronze bout, Gwiz fell behind multi-time World champ and 2016 Olympic title winner Taha Akgul of Turkey 6-0 before storming back with a pair of takedowns in the second period in a 6-4 decision.

Yianni Diakomihalis made his Senior World Championships debut at 65 kg, beginning with a 10-0 first period tech fall against Colin Realbuto of Italy. He was stymied in his next contest, 5-1, by pre-tournament favorite Vazgen Tevanyan of Armenia and when Tevanyan didn't make the finals, the event ended for Diakomihalis.

Another Spartan Combat RTC competitor, Youssif Hemida, notched eighth place at 125 kg for Egypt, including a 9-3 win over India's Kumar Anirudh.
