Fernandez Wins Title; Hansen & Ungar Finish Top 3 at Shorty Hitchcock Open

After placing in his first-ever college tournament last week at the Jonathan Kaloust Bearcat Open, Ethan Fernandez had a memorable time at the Shorty Hitchcock event on Saturday.

The New Jersey native came out on top in all four of his matches to capture the title at 133 pounds. He began with a 10-0 major and then finished with three consecutive decisions on his path to the title.

Also making the finals was Christian Hansen at 174 pounds. Hansen got his hand raised in his first four bouts before losing by decision to LIU Post's Ryan Ferro in the championship match. Hansen had a major decision and defeated opponents from Army West Point, Bloomsburg, George Mason, and Kutztown.

For the second straight weekend, Brett Ungar nabbed third place at 125 pounds in a strong field. Ungar once again impressed with bonus point victories, notching a pair of technical falls (16-0 and 18-1) and a 9-0 major in the bronze bout during a 4-1 day.

Like Ungar, Nate Wade found the podium again after doing so at the Bearcat Open. Wade began with three wins, before a 6-5 setback against Clarion's Brett Moore on riding time in the semis. He grabbed fourth at 149 pounds.

Vince Cornella made his season debut at 141 pounds and looked sharp with a trio of victories in which he tallied a total of 26 points. He then lost in a high scoring contest against the eventual champion from Clarion.

At 165, Brody Oleksak was edged in his opener 3-2, but rebounded by winning his next three matches by a combined score of 9-2.

Also winning three bouts was Evan Canoyer at 174 pounds. Canoyer avenged a loss from the Bearcat Open when he topped Bryson Alsteen of Buffalo, by a 2-1 score, on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Myles Griffin recorded a pin over Brady Worthing of Clarion in his first bout at 141 pounds in his initial action of the campaign.

Ishan Shah and Liam Schibi represented Spartan Combat RTC at 125 and 141 pounds, respectively.

Next up on the schedule is the Mat Town Open in Lock Haven, Pennsylvania on November 28.
