Mat Town Recap: 3 For 3 for Shapiro; Cardinale, Qureshi Place



3 for 3 for Meyer Shapiro.


In his third college tournament, Shapiro won his third championship, this time at the Mat Town Open at Lock Haven University.


He was once again in control from start to finish, recording three falls and a 15-5 major in his four bouts at 149 pounds.


Joining Shapiro on the podium were Foster Cardinale (3rd at 125) and Ethan Qureshi (4th at 133). Cardinale won two of the three matches he wrestled, including a pin over Navy's Grant Treaster in less than a minute. Qureshi won a pair by major decision - 16-5 against Clarion's Clayton Bashor and 17-3 over Hunter Verge of Clarion.


At 141, Mark Botello blanked two opponents from Navy, David Kriedler and Frank Antonelli, by major decision. Also winning twice was Timothy Bova at 157, with a pin and a 15-0 technical fall.


Ashton Davis picked up a pin at heavyweight and Benny Rogers won his opener by 6-3 decision against Jack Pletcher of Pittsburgh.


Liam Finn and Roberto Padilla both competed at 165 pounds for Spartan.
