Shapiro Dominates Clarion Open; Furman, Shvartsman, Hanning Place

Meyer Shapiro made quite an impression in his first college action, dominating his way to the Clarion Open championship with five bonus point victories in his five matches.


He scored a total of 68 points in his first four bouts, which resulted in technical falls over foes from Pittsburgh, Clarion and Brown as well as a major against Clarion.

In the championship, Shapiro pinned Pittsburgh's Tyler Badgett in just over two minutes.

Also making the medal stand was Brendan Furman at heavyweight. The Cornell senior took third, after coming out on top in four bouts, including a fall.

In their debut college events, Ben Shvartsman (165) and Aiden Hanning (184) took seventh place. Shvartsman won four matches on Sunday, including a pin, a tech fall, and two decisions on his way to the podium. Hanning nabbed his first victory with Spartan in a 4-0 shutout of Noah Gnibus. (The 7th/8th match was not wrestled at the tournament).

At 133 pounds, Ethan Qureshi went 2-2 on the day, defeating fellow Spartan wrestler George Oroudjov as well Brown starter Ricky Cabanillas.

Spartan had several wrestlers compete at 157 pounds.

Timothy Bova lost his opener to nationally-ranked Kendall Coleman of Purdue, but bounced back with a pair of victories over opponents from Edinboro and Buffalo before losing an overtime bout.

Cornell student Kaleb Williams earned a win in his initial match, over Clarion's Trevor Elfvin, 8-3, at 157, while Benny Rogers notched a 12-4 major during his first-ever college tournament against Corbin Dion of Gardner-Webb.

Up at 165, Roberto Padilla dropped a tight 8-7 match to the number three seed from Purdue in his first match before racking up a major and a decision in the wrestlebacks.

Ashton Davis also got his hand raised twice, with a pair of bonus point victories at heavyweight over opponents from Clarion and Gardner-Webb.

Vincenzo Napolitana earned a win by fall at 149 pounds over Buffalo's Manny Willins, while Foster Cardinale picked up his first college win at 125 against Christopher Merlo of Edinboro.

Also taking the mat for Spartan Combat RTC were George Oroudjov (133), Liam Finn (165), and Andy Rosa (197).
