World Team Trials: Seeds for Spartan Combat RTC

Updated: Sep 10, 2021

Both Yianni Diakomihalis (65 kg) and Nick Gwiazdowski (125 kg) earned the top spot in their bracket for this weekend's World Team Trials freestyle action.

Grabbing the seventh seed at 79 kg is Devin Skatzka, who will make his Spartan Combat RTC debut in Lincoln. He had an impressive third place run at the Senior Nationals at this weight, winning his first four bouts by a combined 46-1 to reach the semifinals against Isaiah Martinez. He jumped out to a 9-0 lead against Martinez, before the two-time NCAA champ responded with a pin in the second period.

Skatzka then finished strong against two opponents originally registered to compete at the World Team Trials - pinning Muhamed McBryde and then earning the 10-0 tech fall over Michael O'Malley to grab bronze.

Skatzka will face a loaded group at 79 kg. Here's how the seeds look:

1. Jordan Burroughs (Pennsylvania RTC/Sunkist Kids)

2. Alex Dieringer (Cliff Keen WC/Titan Mercury WC)

3. Isaiah Martinez (Beaver WC/ Titan Mercury WC)

4. Jason Nolf (Nittany Lion WC/ Titan Mercury WC)

Scottie Boykin and Andrew Morgan are entered at 92 kg. At the Last Chance Qualifier in mid July, Morgan crushed the competition with four technical falls in four bouts to clinch a spot at the World Team Trials. That tournament was at 86 kg, but since that weight is not being contested in Lincoln, Morgan is making the move up to 92.

Although Boykin competed at 97 kg at the Last Chance Qualifier for the Olympic Trials in May, he'll be back at 92, where he took fourth at Senior Nationals in 2021 to secure his spot at this event.

92 kg seeds:

1. J'den Cox (NJRTC/USOPTC/Titan Mercury WC)

2. Nathan Jackson (NJRTC/New York AC)

3. Kollin Moore (Ohio RTC/Titan Mercury WC)

4. Kyven Gadson (Cyclone RTC/Sunkist Kids)

5. Myles Martin (Scarlet Knights WC/Titan Mercury WC)

6. Michael Macchiavello (Wolfpack WC/Titan Mercury WC)

7. Trent Hidlay (Wolfpack WC/Titan Mercury WC)

8. Timothy Dudley (Sunkist Kids)

Jessy Williams is the lone Greco Roman representative from Spartan. He'll take the mat at 67 kg, where he notched fourth at the Senior Nationals in 2021. His semifinals foe in that event, Alston Nutter, will be in Lincoln as will Olympian Alejandro Sancho.

67 kg Greco Roman seeds:

1. Alejandro Sancho (Army WCAP)

2. Jesse Thielke (Army WCAP)

3. Hayden Tuma (Suples)

4. Calvin Germinaro (Minnesota Storm))

5. Alston Nutter (Sunkist Kids)

6. Peyton Omania (NYAC)

Wrestling starts on September 11 at 11 a.m. Eastern Time.
