Bearcat Open Recap: Ungar, Wade, Fernandez Place

A trio of Spartan Agoge wrestlers - Brett Ungar (125), Nate Wade (149), and Ethan Fernandez (133) reached the podium in their first college tournament.

Ungar impressed throughout the day, recording three dominant major decisions on the way to third place. He began with a 12-0 blanking of Army Prep's Charlie Farmer before shutting out Micah Roes of Binghamton, a wrestler who won a match at the NCAA tournament last season. After a close loss to Greg Diakomihalis in the semis, Ungar pounded Hunter Adrian of Brown in a 16-6 victory for bronze.

Wade began with a trio of decisions over opponents from Buffalo, American, and Binghamton, outscoring his foes 18-8.

He dropped his next two - to the eventual champion and Kolby Depron of Bucknell - to nab fourth at 149.

Fernandez got his hand raised four times in his debut at the college level. He began with a pair of victories, lost a 3-2 bout, and then rebounded with a pin over Navy's Josh Koderhandt and a 5-3 victory over Joe Nelson on his path to sixth at 133.

Christian Hansen won his first two matches, including a 12-1 major, at 174 pounds, while Evan Canoyer also wrestled tough at that weight, yielding just four points.

Brody Oleksak captured his opening match at 165 pounds.

Ishan Shah (125), Liam Schibi (141), Vincenzo Napolitana (141) also took the mat for the first time for Spartan.
