Ruiz Wins Patriot Open; Ferrara, Crace, Saunders Place

For the second straight week, Simon Ruiz earned a championship, this time capturing first place at 174 pounds at the Patriots Open at George Mason University in Virginia.

Ruiz bonused his way through the event, with a pair of major decisions over opponents from NC State and George Mason, in addition to a technical fall against Nolan O'Boyle of North Carolina and a win by disqualification over Kolton Clark of Virginia Tech. Ruiz was winning 17-3 in the third period with over two minutes of riding time at the time Clark was disqualified.

Also getting on the podium for the second consecutive time was Tyler Ferrara at 133 pounds. After taking the Mat Town Open title last weekend, Ferrara went 4-1 to nab fifth in a tournament that does not have full wrestlebacks. Along the way, Ferrara topped wrestlers from George Mason, Virginia, Navy, and the NYCRTC (Columbia).

Carson Crace picked up his first college podium appearance, taking sixth at 184 pounds. Crace dropped his opening bout, but followed with three victories in a row, including pins of Quinn Collins of Rider and Eric Washington Jr of Morgan State.

Josh Saunders also won Mat Town last weekend and this time grabbed third at 149 pounds in a 4-1 performance. Saunders began with a major decision of Franklin & Marshall's Josh Hillard and also bested two opponents from Penn and Billy Talmadge of Lock Haven. His one loss was in sudden victory.

Kaleb Williams had a pair of victories at 157 pounds - a major decision and a technical fall. Speaking of 157, Buzzy Bomberger won by fall at that weight as well.

Carter Tate registered a decision over David Kreidler of Navy at 141, while Roberto Padilla earned a win at 165.

Also competing for Spartan were Ernie Perry (125), Matt Dougherty (125), George Oroudjov (141), Zahir McLean-Felix (174), and Tyson Carroll (285).
